Always have a great time here....a little background is that a benefactor bequeathed this land to Johnston Community College provided they use it mainly to carry out environmental education....It is also open for hunting (deer, turkey, boar), fishing (five ponds and access to Neuse river and Mill Creek), camping, hiking and lots more staff directed activities...The land is well maintained and respected....the visitor's center also functions as a classroom environment and displays of reptiles and fowl
Staff was awesome. Great place to stop on the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail! Tell Jordan, 'Kemp says hey'
I love exploring the trails but dislike the fact that the learning center is seldom open. I've been a few times and only once was an employee present and we had to ask for her to unlock the doors so we could look at the snakes inside.
Cool outdoor area. Have been dog training here.
As a child we took trips to Howell woods and loved it.My latest experience was less than satisfactory. Me & my husband planned a camping & fishing trip , called two days in advance and was told that we could go anytime as long as we signed in at the learning center & paid our fees. Upon arrival we done as instructed looked at the map and headed towards a camp site. On our way we saw a pond and as we stopped we were quickly ran up on. The two men who approached us told us told us the gate was supposed to be closed and we werent allowed in the normal camping areas nor were allowed at any other pond. There is a sign stating the gates may be closed at anytime nothing else listed not even on their website or when you talk to someone directly via phone. We were instructed to follow him back to Savannah pond [which is directly at the front] was told this is where we were allowed to fish , forget the fact we packed , brought wood and all [ as stated online ] and paid our fees. Needless to say we tried the pond and then left never felt so uncomftorable and unwelcomed in my life. Had packed and couldnt camp , done everything as instructed only to be pretty much ran off. I am highly disappointed in the info i was given and the way we were treated. Im guessing this is the grounds keeper [ being he built a shelter at the pond we were allowed at] per his friend stating that] , but never ever stated who he was, neither of them did. Five ponds, multiple campgrounds , and we were the only ones who had signed in for that day , I have never been so miss informed or let down in my life we truly anticipated this trip and can say that Howell woods is loosing our business. One of the worst experiences ever!
